Support

UNi peersUni Peers Program
“Uni Peers Program” is the home based, recovery focused supported accommodation service of ROAM Communities. Finding sustainable support delivery models that deliver quality outcomes for people with mental disorders provides governments and NGO’s with a significant challenge. Traditional supported accommodation models afford once fortnightly or once weekly support due to the inhibiting cost of paid staff. ROAM’s Uni Peers Program efficiently multiplies the work of skilled paid staff with effectively facilitated University students whose support work for ROAM is Groupaccredited as part of their coursework and spread out over the length of an entire year in order to provide improved outcomes for clients.

The support consists of a mix of support sessions, liaison, and coordination. Levels of support vary significantly according to individuals needs. It is part of ourphilosophy to provide as much opportunity for freedom, choice, and decision making for clients as possible. Whilst we can and do offer some living skills training, most of our efforts are spent problem solving and assisting people to access services in the community. Significant focus is given to identifying client’s needs and linking them to community options related to educational, vocational and leisure needs through brokerage.

Education

Mental Health First Aid LogoBasic First Aid is the initial help given to someone experiencing a physical health problem before professional help arrives. Mental Health First Aid teaches similar skills for mental disorders.

One in every five Australians suffers mental disorders in any one year. Any one of us may encounter a mental health crisis at home, at work or in a public place. Mental Health issues are not taught in basic first aid, so most of us would not know what to do in what may be a chronically disabling or life threatening situation.

Developed at the Australian National University this multi award winning, internationally acclaimed training program will teach participants how to:

  • Preserve life(minimise risk of suicide and harm)
  • Improve mental health literacy
  • Reduce Stigma
  • Recognise different mental health disorders
  • Explore treatment and resources for common disorders
  • Apply crisis first Aid for acute situations.

Mental Health First Aid has been designed to develop skills and knowledge to enable a person to better manage a developing mental health problem in a friend, family member, work colleague or even him/her self.

Just as employees are trained in regular First Aid it is important for OHS, Line Managers, Supervisors and all customer service staff to know about mental health first Aid. In April 2006 the Australian Government’s Senate Select Committee recommended that 6% of all Australians should be trained in this course!
